What are online e-mail consultations?
Online consultations provide therapeutic online sessions for personal and social issues via the Web they are also called “Internet therapy”, “e-therapy”, and “cybercounselling, email therapy, e-counseling, and distance therapy.
Please note that online consultations are generally not considered a complete substitute for face-to-face sessions; however, it provides immediate assistance where help is not close by or when in-person visits are not possible.
Online consultations may not meet everyone’s needs. Because of the medium, online sessions may not be an effective means of responding to those who feel: suicidal, homicidal or have other psychiatric symptoms where physical human contact may be needed to intervene.
How effective is on-line email therapy verses in-person therapy?
Online therapy has been proven to be effective in many cases. Many issues can be discussed, and worked on in this format in the same manner as we would in-person, but through email counselling.
There are certain conditions and issues that are not suitable for online therapy such as mental health emergencies and matters of crisis.
Certain other conditions and challenges are best dealt with in-person and your therapist will address this possibility in your introductory session if necessary.
How do I initiate an email session?
Email counselling sessions are pre-paid here by purchasing a block of emails.
How does the online e-mail sessions work?
For your therapist a minimum of 50 minutes is invested in carefully responding to your email. We will try to be very clear in our response, and if there is any confusion please send us an immediate and short email so we can attempt to clarify. Please put ‘CLARIFICATION’ in your subject line so your request is not debited from the number of emails purchased.
I strongly suggest you invest the same 50 plus minutes in writing your email. What you write is important!
A good rule or practice is to write your email, save it for a day, and re-read it before sending it. This process allows you time to consider the heart of what you want to say and how you want to say it in writing. This is particularly important if you are responding at a time when you are filled with emotion, or replying to my email that raised some question for you. Wanting to re-draft what you said the next day is often a sign that you are making progress.
I encourage you to use full sentence structure, and be as descriptive as you can when explain your issues and feelings. It is helpful to image that you are sitting in front of your therapist as you write.
Insert emoticons (those neat little icons that smile, laugh or cry…) to let me know how you are feeling as you write. You may also want to use square brackets “[ ]” and enter your feelings, or even body postures in here to help me get the feel of what is going on for you. Ie. [Feeling frustrated I cannot say this in person right now!] You will find if we use this process in communicating it helps us both to be clear about what we say and how we are saying it.
How often do we Email?
This is up to you, but I like to hear back from you within a few days to a week to help keep things topical and the conversation flowing smoothly. Schedule your writing time as you would any other important meeting.
*Sendic and Hushmail are free services but not without their unique features. Please read the instructions carefully. Sometimes encrypted email service such as this can take a while to actually send your email as the encryption process can be time consuming. Always allow time for your email to send, and get your confirmation, before closing your email window, elsewise your email may be lost permanently.
