Purpose

It is the  million dollar question: “What is my purpose?”

For some this question comes early in life, for others it may come as a midlife crisis, and yet others may stumble upon this question when forced to deal with major changes in their life.

Often loss precipitates our search for meaning and purpose.

It may be the loss of a job, the loss of a relationship, the loss of a loved one.

For others change such as the prospect of a marriage, a new career, children, midlife, or retirement, are the beginning of our search for meaning and purpose.

For a lucky few this question may come early in life, as early as late adolescence or early 20s. These young but wise people realize early that life does not come with an instruction book.

They are not unlike a young athlete who recognizes that to hone your craft and reach that Olympic gold, they must carefully select a professional coach, who can guide them on their journey to the greatness. (If you are one of these young people please note that you are absolutely some of my most favorite people in the world!) I have little doubt that your life will be full of excitement, flavor, satisfaction, and perhaps even a fun crazy ride as you wind up at the rewarding purposeful destination of your choice. Love it or hate it, we are all a product of the world in which we grew up. And not unlike the programming in a computer, our brain has been learning since birth, and sometimes this decades old programming isn’t so helpful in navigating the complexity of your life today.

The good news is that we now know that we can reprogram our brains to help us not only navigate life’s challenges, but to feel happier, and more content as we move forward in this journey.

Our brains ability to change is called in neuroplasticity, and you can learn a little more about it here and a therapist can teach you how create these changes in your brain.

There is a special and unique quality that a relationship with a therapist provides. In all of our interpersonal relationships what we say do or how we act comes with some risk, the risk of deepening, or creating distance in, our relationship. In a therapeutic relationship your therapist/counselor/coach provides a nonjudgmental space in which you can explore your thoughts (even the messy ones) without fear of judgment or reprisal.

Much like an Olympian’s coach, a counselor/therapist/coach provides you with the tools and techniques, to reach your life goals.

They help you put your new skills in place, then perfect them, as you face your challenges, and navigate your journey towards fulfilling your life’s purpose.

Figuring out your life’s purpose can be a bit daunting. Navigating the road to get from here to there, can be even more so.
