The Power of Virtual Counselling

With the launch of GenesisSquared’s new website, we are proud to introduce our Virtual Counselling Services.  Virtual Counselling will be available in three ways: video counselling online, telephone counselling, and email counselling.

virtual consellingEach of these forms of counselling have been around for many years, and there is substantial research that shows they can be highly effective for certain specific needs.

At GenesisSquared we have been providing these forms of counselling for some time. For the most part we utilized a virtual counselling for our existing one-on-one clients who were traveling, on extended leaves, or needed to touch base for a short and specific question.

Although in person one-on-one relationships always afford the greatest opportunity for effective communication, video videoconferencing is not far behind. At GenesisSquared we currently use a video service called Skype that can be downloaded from the web free of charge. This service allows us to talk real time and face to face. Videoconferencing is about as close to being in the same room as one can get! It is an ideal form of counselling for those who are traveling, or have mobility or time constraints that prevent you from traveling to your therapist’s office.

Even more accessible is telephone counselling. This form of counselling has been used for many years by therapists globally. Although the face-to-face contact is missing, research has proven that intentional telephone conversations with a skilled therapist can have a profound impact. Telephone counselling is also frequently used to fill in those appointment times when one-on-one clients are on vacation, or traveling for business. At GenesisSquared counselling is a proactive and participatory experience. Frequently new skills that are learned in session are experienced between sessions by the client as a kind of “homework.” If you remember homework when you were in school, you know that sometimes you would run into difficult patches that seemed to bring you to a stop, or you simply found it challenging to remain motivated. Clients have often found that by accessing a telephone session, they can get help in pushing past smaller challenges between sessions, or even get that extra little push to make the smaller changes they wish to make in order to improve their world.

Email counselling is a fairly new form of counselling. Again there is substantial research to show that in specific circumstances email counselling can be an effective method of achieving one’s goals. Email counselling is more suited to dealing with smaller practical problems where the advice of the counsellor may be sought before a decision is made or an action is taken. One of the distinct advantages of email counselling is the opportunity to think through what you want to say and how you want to say it.

Another powerful little executive coaching tip that applies to email, and to email counselling, is, “The 24 Hour Rule.” The 24 Hour Rule is a personally imposed rule that says whenever we have an email to send which holds the possibility of profoundly impacting ourselves or another, the email is to be written, and stored in your draft box for a minimum of 24 hours. This allows the executive, or at email counselling client, to review what they said and how they set it, before they hit that nonreturnable button called “Send!” You can be rest assured that your counsellor will invest a minimum of a full hour thinking through and composing their responses to your emails.

GenesisSquared was created out of a belief by its founder Todd Kaufman that we can make the world a better place, one conversation at a time. We are now very excited to be able to reach out to more clients through our virtual counselling services. For more information check out our website www.GenesisSquared.com
